WordPress live events are finally returning and this year’s WordCamp Europe will happen in Athens, Greece in June.
“But, heck, it’s only mid-February!” you might be saying. So why am I mentioning this now? If my own experience is any indication, booking your hotel and flight arrangements early can make for a significant discount, not to mention better choice and availability (and easier to cancel, if necessary). Many folks book their hotel rooms via the discounted offerings, but don’t forget to look at alternatives, like sharing a rental house. Twitter used to be the venue of choice for announcing such alternatives, but I’m not sure where those are being posted these days.
About WordCamp Europe
WordCamp Europe (WCEU) is one of the largest WordPress conferences in the world. This annual event welcomes all WordPress enthusiasts and aims to strengthen connections between the growing European communities that support and contribute to the open-source project.
WordCamp Europe includes two conference days and a separate Contributor day, where people from all around the world gather to share knowledge, connect, and contribute back to the WordPress project.
The conference is hosted in a different European city each year and organized by volunteers from the WordPress community. WordCamp Europe 2023 is in Athens, Greece. Located in the centre of Athens, just a short walk away from a range of historic landmarks, the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre is one of the largest venues in the capital, hosting 6,000 people with a range of meeting and auditoriums.
When I attended WCEU in 2016, the ticket sales were the largest to date (over 2000!) and even if WCEU2016 was filled with very approachable people, and it was, it was a challenge to really get to know folks. WordCamp Europe has only grown in size since then and the thought of sharing a space for 3 days with upwards of 5,000 people is a bit mind-boggling. Venues like WP Cafe and the informal Hallway meetups help to break the experience down into more digestible portions and I’m sure the organizers will consider adding other smaller events to the schedule. This is really important for first-time attendees.
If this is your first (or second or third) time in Athens, make sure to make time for just being a tourist and enjoying it all.
Will I be attending WCEU2023? Sadly, no, as it conflicts with a family event that was put off due to Covid. Hopefully I’ll see you on the Livestream.
